Assessment of need for care – always contact before going to emergency services

Your need for care is assessed and appointments are booked either by phone or online.

  • You can call the Emergency Helpline at 116 117. The Emergency Helpline is available 24/7.
  • You can use the Emergency Helpline’s (Päivystysapu 116 117) chat service, which is available daily from 8:00 to 20:00. You can access the chat via Oma Ekhva.
  • You can also contact us through the symptom assessment digital channel in Omaolo.
  • You can call our health and social services centre phone service at 05 352 7260 (Mon–Fri 7:00–20:00).

After the assessment of your need for care, you will be provided with self-care instructions, directed to the appropriate professional, urgent care, or emergency services according to your needs.

Medical Helpline 116 117

Call the Medical Helpline’s toll-free number 116117 before seeking medical attention from the Wellbeing services county of South Karelia emergency room. We will guide you to the appropriate location for treatment and will advise you how urgently you need to seek treatment. If your condition can be treated with self-care, we will provide you with care instructions.

In an urgent case, you can come directly to the emergency clinic if you cannot contact the Medical Helpline within a reasonable time or if you are unable to use a phone. If you have an emergency referral, you do not need to phone the Medical Helpline; you can come directly to the emergency room.

Emergency room

The emergency room of South Karelia Central Hospital (K-wing, Lappeenranta) is open 24/7.

Urgent care clinics

The assessment of the need for care directs a patient to the emergency department due to a sudden illness, acute worsening of a long-term illness or reduced functional capacity that requires treatment within 1–3 days, but not on an emergency basis. An appointment must always be made for an emergency department. There are emergency departments at most of our health and social services centres. The emergency departments in the T-wing (1st floor) of the South Karelia Central Hospital and Honkaharju (health and social services centre) in Imatra are also open in the evenings, on weekends and on public holidays.
